C.S. Lewis' Prediction of Transhumanism
How 'That Hideous Strength' Foretold of AI, Singularity, & Life Extension Technologies
Dear Barrel Aged Christians,
75 years ago, C.S. Lewis predicted where we would find ourselves in 2024 as scientists and engineers purse technologies that are meant to enhance the human experience and even extend our lives. Of course, any technology can be used for good or evil, but Christians must show a greater commitment today in cautioning the world about crossing certain ethical lines, particularly when it comes to technologies that can alter the mind or ‘achieve’ immortality apart from our Creator. CBS News recently reported on a secular or naturalist church dedicated to this whole project:
“There are also secular organizations that promote the idea that people can live forever, such as the Church of Perpetual Life. Members believe they can achieve immortality on Earth through radical life-extension technologies such as gene editing or cryonic preservation – freezing bodies after death in hopes that they can someday be resuscitated.”1
Please watch my short video above about different transhumanist technologies that are emerging today and how C.S. Lewis warned us about them in his book, ‘That Hideous Strength,’ long ago.
Have a blessed Friday and be entirely His,
-Kyle
P.S. Here is a video clip from a longer video I made this week on the soul’s journey after death. Though death is a fearful thing, we have a Lord who has passed through it and declawed it. However, death is still filled with great sorrow and grief as my own family has learned this year. What is hopeful even about this grief is that God can use it, both in the living and faithfully departed, to bring us closer to Him. C.S. Lewis certainly believed this when his wife, Joy, departed from this life, and he writes about it in ‘A Grief Observed.’

Lewis was definitely prescient in writing THS. Great analysis here and keep up the good work
